Tutoring
A major goal of the UNC Asheville Teaching Fellows Program is to prepare students for the classroom. One way we accomplish this goal is through continuous tutoring and mentoring experiences during a Fellow's four years at the university. Teaching Fellows are given the opportunity to tutor at various grade levels in the subject of their choice, creating a learning environment for Fellows as well as the students. Asheville offers a unique setting for Fellows to alternate between rural and city school tutoring placements to diversify their experience.
The tutoring experiences are fun and exciting for everyone. Both tutors and students benefit from the program. Numerous Teaching Fellows still keep in touch with students tutored in the past semester or previous year. The students are often able to come to the university and shadow their tutor for a day or join them for a Bulldog basketball game.
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), Lee Walker Heights (Helpful Hands), H.E.L.P., and Hall Fletcher Elementary After-School Progams provide many opportunities for Fellows to be trained and gain experience within area schools. Although nothing can fully prepare an aspiring teacher for the classroom, UNC Asheville Teaching Fellows are given the opportunity to use these tutoring experiences as a learning environment. Fellows are responsible for leading tutoring groups, although more experienced teachers are always available if help is needed. If the axiom "practice makes perfect" is true, the UNC Asheville Teaching Fellows are well on their way to perfection.
