NC Teaching Fellows Program

Mission and Student Learning Outcomes

Mission

The mission of the Teaching Fellows Program at the University of North Carolina-Asheville is to develop effective and professional educators and citizens by providing academic, co-curricular, and cultural enrichment.  Fellows participate in high quality academic seminars designed to foster a multidisciplinary perspective, as well as school, community, and service activities that provide practical experiences in diverse settings and enhance the development of professional dispositions.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. UNC Asheville Teaching Fellows demonstrate interdisciplinary knowledge as a result of participation in academically and culturally enriched teacher preparation that extends beyond the regular college program.  Teaching Fellows explore the topics in their own major and connections to other disciplines through the demonstration of the depth and breadth of their knowledge related to the content they teach.  Evidence of this knowledge is evaluated as they plan and deliver lesson plans, produce personal reflections regarding experiences in which they participate, and create a state mandated project exploring content in the specialty area with a focus on global awareness in relation to the subject.
  2. UNC Asheville Teaching Fellows demonstrate professional dispositions in varied educational settings with regard to a diversity of students and all members of the school community.  Teaching Fellows work to develop an awareness of and respect for differences among the students, educators, and peers with whom they work by engaging in courses and teaching/tutoring activities which include planning for differentiation for diverse learners.  All Fellows must demonstrate evidence of professional dispositions as evaluated throughout the Fellows and teacher licensure programs and as per a state mandated product rating each Fellow with regard to their capacity in the area of professional dispositions as a requirement for state teacher licensure.  Fellows clarify and articulate their own values through reflections on each of these experiences in a variety of formats and venues.
  3. UNC Asheville Teaching Fellows demonstrate dedication to a sense of mission and service as responsible and engaged citizens.  Teaching Fellows participate in community and school service projects throughout their undergraduate experience.  Tutoring, volunteering, and committee service are required activities of all Teaching Fellows.  Fellows demonstrate their responsibility and engagement as a result of such participation through reflections on each of these experiences in a variety of formats and venues.
